Being a mentor with Boys to Men Mentoring Hawaiʻi means showing up consistently, listening deeply, and walking alongside boys during some of the most important years of their lives. Our mentors are caring adult men who understand that positive masculinity is learned through relationships, example, and accountability—not lectures or quick fixes.
Mentors commit to participating in a weekly school-based J-Group Circle during the school year, typically 45–60 minutes per week, including setup and wrap-up. Mentors may also choose to support Adventure Weekends and Rites of Passage Weekends, which take place a few times each year and require additional time. Consistency is essential, as boys rely on mentors to show up and be present.
No prior mentoring experience is required. All mentors complete background checks, initial training, and receive ongoing support and guidance from program staff. Mentors are expected to uphold program agreements, respect cultural practices, and maintain the safety and dignity of all participants.
Mentors receive a $50 stipend per weekly mentoring session as a gesture of appreciation for their commitment. Mileage related to program activities is also reimbursed, helping reduce out-of-pocket costs associated with participation.
Mentoring is a commitment—but it is also deeply rewarding. Mentors often report personal growth, stronger connections to community, and a renewed sense of purpose. By offering time, presence, and consistency, mentors help young men grow into leaders grounded in kuleana (responsibility), mālama (care), lokahi (balance), and aloha.
If you are ready to make a meaningful difference and be part of a supportive community of men, we invite you to step forward and become a mentor with Boys to Men Mentoring Hawaiʻi.
