Schools Support

School Support

Boys to Men Mentoring Hawaiʻi works closely with school administrators and staff to ensure programs are effective, safe, and meaningful for participating boys. Our programs require collaboration and support from schools, but there is no cost families. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit funded through grants and community fundraising.

Administrative and Staff Support

Schools can help BTMH programs succeed by:

  • Designate a Point of Contact: A counselor or staff member serves as our weekly check-in for updates on the boys, scheduling changes, or other important information.
  • Program Orientation: Meet with counseling or administrative staff to review program goals, structure, and expectations. This helps staff select boys for participation and distribute consent forms to parents/guardians.
  • Data Support: Assist with collection of quarterly academic data—grades, attendance, and behavioral referrals—as well as pre- and post-program surveys (Panorama or Boys to Men Surveys). Digital device support may be needed for survey administration.
  • Space for Groups: Identify a private or semi-private area for J-Group Circles. Outdoor spaces work well, with a classroom available as a back-up for weather.
  • Scheduling & Logistics: Confirm a start date, weekly day, and group hours. Discuss opportunities for off-campus activities or service projects.
  • Policies & Resources: Share school policies regarding snacks, phones, or other classroom rules, and highlight available resources or potential service projects on campus or in the community.

Selection Criteria for Participants

BTMH groups are designed to provide support to boys who can benefit most from mentorship and peer connection. Recommended selection criteria include:

  • Boys needing improvement in grades, attendance, or behavior
  • Socioeconomic or family challenges
  • Limited access to positive male role models or father figures
  • Social isolation or limited support networks
  • Ability to contribute positively to the group dynamic without frequent disruption
  • Willingness or need to try new approaches to personal growth

Our Role

We see ourselves as additional support for the boys— “uncles from down the street” —who can offer guidance, encouragement, and a safe space to talk. Our goal is to provide an extended support system, helping boys develop confidence, responsibility, and meaningful connections—no matter their support at home.
